Relationship Counselling

Relate Lanarkshire and Scottish Marriage Care provide relationship counselling services to anyone aged 16 or over living in North or South Lanarkshire, whether you are married, living together, in a same-sex relationship, separated, divorced or single. Our confidential services can help you to deal with your relationship difficulties and you can come on your own or with a partner.

We are all about relationships. If you want to talk about your relationships past, present or future, how your family is affected by your relationship, how you can improve your relationship, how you can manage a separation constructively or how you can get over a break up, Relate Lanarkshire and Scottish Marriage Care are here to help you. You can contact us if you have any questions about our counselling services or if you would like to make an initial appointment.

What happens at a counselling session and how can it help?

With your counsellor you’ll explore your feelings, values and expectations, and gain assistance with communication and problem solving and look at options and new possibilities.

Counselling helps you take time out from your situation and see it from a fresh perspective. Working with a counsellor gives you, or you and your partner, a chance to think about what you can do to change your situation for the better. It can also give you a chance to explore complex or difficult issues in a safe and confidential environment.

Is relationship counselling confidential?

Counselling is completely confidential. We will not give your name or any information about you to anyone outside our organisation, unless someone’s personal safety is at risk.

Are counsellors specially trained?

All our counsellors have received special training in relationship counselling. It takes two to three years to become a fully qualified counsellor. They may undergo further training to specialise in areas such as family counselling or sex therapy. All counsellors continue with ongoing training and consultation with other professionals to ensure they give you the highest standard of counselling.

Do I pay for counselling sessions?

Both Relate Lanarkshire and Scottish Marriage Care are charities and do not aim to make a profit from the services they provide.

Relate Lanarkshire provide their service free at the point of delivery but rely on donations to cover the costs of running a professional counselling service.

Scottish Marriage Care provides counselling sessions free of charge but clients who are able to do so are encouraged to contribute towards the cost, each session costs SMC £40.
